Term 4 (Boys): Year 10 Rat Race Nottingham to Paris...Session One:

Term 2 is welcoming the Year 10 Boys to the Nottingham to Paris Series and is now the chance for the Boys to see whether they can compete with the Girls from Year 11.

On the 3rd of April, the Year 10 Boys experienced their first 'Rat Race: Nottingham to Paris' in the Gym at the Djanogly Leisure Centre. It was a very successful session and the students were full of energy striving to gain the bonuses on offer.

A whopping total of 663.20KM (Week 1 Group 1 Girls 502.22KM) was covered by the four teams competing. The boys were working together selecting strategies in their teams choosing which piece of equipment to use and how long to stay on for e.g. Treadmill/ Exercise Bike/ Rowing Machine etc. All teams worked very hard and at the end of the session all of the individual scores were recorded and totalled.

After the first session the scores are as follows;

4TH PLACE:

TEAM 3
TOTAL: 144.89KM
POSITION: On the M1 Outside Luton

3RD PLACE:

TEAM 4
TOTAL: 158.04KM
POSITION: On the M1 Just Past Luton

2ND PLACE:

TEAM 2
TOTAL: 172.24KM
POSITION: On the M1 Outside Watford

1ST PLACE:

TEAM 1
TOTAL: 188.03KM
POSITION: Just Past Watford

We also had some amazing individual scores and the top 3 are;

1st = 58.84 (x4 Bonus)
2nd = 52.04KM (x4 Bonus)
3rd = 50.52KM (x4 Bonus)

The names of students that recorded these scores will remain anonymous until Session 3 and then full leaderboard will be published. The winner then will be awarded their prize for the outstanding contribution they have given to their group and also the benefits they have gained from the workouts.

Excellent start to the 'Rat Race: Nottingham to Paris'! Will TEAM 3 catch TEAM 4 and will TEAM 1 still be the team to catch? Bring on Session Two on TUESDAY!

'Geocaching at Djanogly Competition' Week 1 (Term 4):

Yesterday was the first day of the 'Geocaching at Djanogly Competition' and the weather was perfect. The teams remained the same from the 'Djanogly Rat Race - Nottingham to Paris'.
To recap the team names are;
- Lanasujoja
- Barbie Girls
- Spongebob Circle Pants :)
- Six Lions

Each team had at least one smartphone (e.g. Iphone/ Blackberry/ HTC etc) and had a active Twitter account to access the links to the Geocaches. They either had to follow MrPKeirnan_PKK or the Hashtag #PKKGEO to see the tweets on their phones.

On Day 1 we decided to only have 3 Geocaches available to the groups and they were represented by 3 balls. See below;

The teams were given a brown envelope with 3 items inside and all were marked with either a 1, 2 or 3 (Corresponding to which Geocache they are going to). See below the items that were used;

For example, if Lanasujoja were heading to Geocache 1 they must collect the treasure that is there and leave the item number 1 for the next group that find it. It is then repeated at Geocache number 2 and 3.

So the competition began and all teams started at the entrance to the Forest Recreation Ground that is adjacent to Djanogly City Academy. When the first tweet was sent the group that powered out in front was Lanasujoja and to my surprise had caught me up at the Geocache point. From there i had to lose the group as they could have just followed me to the next point. Here is a photo hint;

The rest of the groups got off to a steady start and advanced from Geocache 1 to 2, here is the GPS  point for Geocache 2;

With Lanasujoja way out in front of the other groups I tweeted a GPS position near the park on the Forest and left for another position at the top of the forest near the cemetary. I later tweeted that it was a hoax and there was no Geocache there. Lanasujoja then decided to retreat back to the starting position, which was when i tweeted the final Geocache 3. Here is a photo hint;

The pupils thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon and we had a few technical hiccups (Pupils unable to see the GPS position on the map and then i posted a photo for them to see where i was). Well done girls for carrying on despite the problems and next week we will have more Geocaches for you to find (with a twist).

The scores have counted and they can be accessed via google docs, here;

Well done and we will be looking forward to next weeks lesson!!
